The following resources are provided at the school to further support student learning and wellness.
Fitness Centre
The J.J Bowlen Fitness Center is a wonderful complement to the Physical Education Program as well as, a great activity for all students to take advantage of at the school. The Fitness Centre has a variety of cardio training equipment, free weights, stretching areas, bikes, rowers and weight training machines. As well, students have the opportunity to participate in a Fitness Club. Come check it out!
Learning Coach
Teachers at our school are learning more and more about how to accommodate for mild learning disabilities and other special needs within the classroom. The role of the Learning Coach is to provide direct and indirect support to students who are struggling academically. The direct support comes in the form of working one-on-one or in small groups with students to give them assistance with their organizational and study skills, and with their core assignments.
Indirectly, the Learning Coach supports the students by working with their teachers, including planning ways to adapt academic programs if required. Teachers of the core subjects are generally the professionals who first discover that there may be some sort of learning difficulty, so referrals generally come from the teaching staff. The Learning Coach also coordinates the development of IPP's (Individualized Program Plans) and the individual assessment of students. Please feel free to call for an appointment if you have concerns about your child's academic progress, or if you would like to review the standardized testing that has been administered.
Library
Our Library currently has over 15,000 items, which students and staff can borrow to support student learning and interests. Each student is assigned a username and password, providing them with access to the school's Chromebooks. The students are responsible for any materials borrowed from the school library. Materials and/or equipment lost or damaged will be added to the Parent PowerSchool account.
School Council
The School Council meets up to six times a school year to provide support and guidance to the school. We encourage all parents and guardians to take an active role in the education of their students by participating in it.
St. Dominic Savio Parish Team
The school works with the parish team regularly to plan celebrations and special projects. The parish is located across the street from the school and students visit the parish to participate in celebrations throughout the year. A senior youth group, for students ages 13 to 17, meets regularly on Wednesdays at parish, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Read more about our Catholic Fatih.

Family School Liaison Worker (FSLW)
J. J. Bowlen's FSLW provides support and advice to students and their parents, assisting in the achievement of emotional well-being for all. Visibility and approachability is imperative; therefore, the FSLW's office door is always open and visits to the classrooms remind the students that she is available. The ultimate goal of the FSLW is not only to successfully instill skills of conflict/problem resolution to the students, but to also inspire these same students to be leaders and teach these necessary life skills to their peers.
Family School Liaison Workers (FSLW) facilitate the relationship between the home, school environment and community organizations supporting student achievement by acting as a communication liaison and helping all students feel welcome in the school. FSLW’s assess the needs of the child and family and offer support including home visits, referral to community organizations, and counselling to positively manage challenging issues and events. Family School Liaison Workers play an important role in the school and provide support to other staff members to understand a variety of topics including trauma, equity, grief and loss and anti-racism through consultation and presentations.
Students and parents can access the FSLW by making an appointment or by being referred by a teacher. Not all students who come to see the FSLW are having some type of difficulty, in most cases, students and parents just need someone to talk to where they will not be judged, they will be listened to and be offered some advice.
